Riccarton House – Deans Bush

Winner of the 2016 Heritage Tourism Award: Originally built in the late 1800’s Riccarton House a Victorian and Edwardian homestead is a key element in the European history of Canterbury. After it was damaged by the earthquakes, we accepted the mammoth task of extensive strengthening, repairing and then fully restoring this famous Deans family house back to the appropriate era correct style. The work we did here remains largely unseen but has recreated a tangible reminder of our past for the future. We are particularly proud and encourage you to join local, national and international visitors as they step back in time and visit this open home.

Gaiety Hall

The Gaiety Theatre, built in 1879 is a significant Canterbury heritage building and an Akaroa icon most recognisable for its massive plasterwork facade. Post-earthquake like many of our Heritage buildings it sat badly damaged and in need of general maintenance work, particularly to repair hidden timber rot and leaks. Our initial work scope was added to as we discovered that in order to bring this Category 2 listed building back to its former glory once it had been seismically strengthened it required expert and sympathetic repairs. Our Gaiety Theatre restoration was recognised at the 2016 Heritage Awards receiving a “Highly Commended” in the 2016 Public Realm – Saved and Restored category.

Acland House

Built in 1893, Acland House was purchased by Christchurch Girls High School as a boarding house for pupils in 1921. The Christchurch earthquakes caused significant damage. Simon Construction were appointed as Main Contractor to do the seismic strengthening and redevelopment. The seismic upgrade required substantial strengthening works with the provision of new structural steel to support an open plan environment on the ground floor and provide the strength required to sustain the dormitory upstairs. Canterbury Heritage Award, Commended 2016 NZ Institute of Architects Local Award 2016 NZ Society of Engineering Earthquake Strengthening Awards, Highly Commended Residential 2016 Redeveloped areas included a new kitchen, larger dining room with recycled flooring, greater dormitory space, new ablution areas and a repositioned grand staircase. The entrance way was also recreated and repositioned to provide a more welcoming entrance. The end result is greatly improved functionality and more space, whilst all the time respecting Acland’s rich heritage.
